Pirates & Shipwrecks

Print

ECRC, in cooperation with the SeaDiscover Shipwreck Museum of Ocean City, Maryland, takes two of the greatest fears of early sailing explorers and uses them to provide hands on motivating actions for participants. This Action Pack first takes the participant into understanding how ships were indeed lost in stormy seas and gales as they tried to find riches and make it back to Europe and then brings into focus the world of pirates, another great fear of voyagers. Kings of Europe encouraged and paid sailors to both search for riches and become sailors who stole riches on the high seas. Each, piracy and the peril of the sea often led to grief as rich cargoes sank to the bottom with the crew.

There is a great deal of research evidence to support the creation of such a set of Motivator Maps. Pirates greatly enjoyed playing themselves at pretend trials in between sailing raids. A self-imposed "Trial by Pirate" can give young people a sense of the pirates of yesteryear. Similarly, known sunken cargo, the techniques of divers, and treasure already and still missing off coasts around the world, offer a world of learning and fun. Pirates & Shipwrecks take you there.
