Adopt-A-Cichlid

July 19th, 2007

Hello. I’m doing a blog on the raising of convict cichlid fry, but with a twist. Tomorrow, the fry’s parents will be removed, and a new breeding pair (without fry) will be introduced. I am planning to study these cichlid’s adoptive care of other convict fry. This behavior has been observed in angelfish, and I want to test it in convicts.

Day 2

It has been one day since the new parents were added. Both are very healthy, and are a breeding pair in full colors. They are gently caring for their new adopted fry. Both parents are guarding the young ferociously, and are treating them as their own. I will post pictures soon.

Day 3

Pictures at last!

All About Arowanas

July 18th, 2007

arowana2      The Arowana is an ancient species that has been swimming the world’s waters for millions of years. There are 7 species in 3 subfamilies. There is Osteoglossum bicrrhosum, Osteoglossum ferreirai, Scleropages Formosus, Scleropages Jardini, Heterotis niloticus, Arapaima gigas, and Scleropages leichardti. We keep the silver O. bicrrhosum. It is approximately 1.5 feet long. Silver Arowanas in the wild will grow very large, with some specimens reaching over 48in. All species of arowana are accomplished jumpers, with silvers known to catch flying birds, giant insects, baby crocodilians, and even smaller primates. The arowana is a spectacular show specimen that is a display hard to beat. These intelligent predators are known to leap from aquariums, but when properly maintained, it is possible for them to live over 25 years.
